How to Put an End to Your Credit Card Debt
Having credit card debt can be really stressful. You may be finding it hanging over you with every financial decision you make and thinking about it can keep you up at night. Everyone dreams to put an end on credit card debts and get financial freedom. Yet many people simply don’t know how to get free from this situation.
The good news is that you can put an end to your credit card debt. There are simple steps you can take today to start paying off your debt and improving your credit rating.
This is a simple step that can genuinely put an end to your credit card debt. To budget properly, you need to be completely honest with yourself about what you spend money on each month, and how much you have coming in each month.
Take the time to budget properly. Sit down and write out all of your incoming and outgoing expenses. Start to identify what your biggest expenses are, and where you could consider cutting costs. Figure out which costs are essential such as utility bills and food, and which are perhaps a bit more luxurious.
Be realistic when budgeting. There’s no point setting yourself unachievable goals – it’s far more effective to work out exactly how much you can save each month, whilst still making other necessary payments and repayments.
Assess your debts
It can be really effective to review your debts and consider which are the most expensive and which are less in terms of monthly repayments. Putting all your debts down on a spreadsheet is a good way to accurately see what’s costing you what.
You should generally aim to start paying off your most expensive debt first. This will usually be the one with the highest rate of interest so look carefully at interest rates, long terms and repayment amounts for each loan that you have.
Once you have paid off your most expensive debt, you can move onto the second most expensive one. Eventually, you’ll be left with the least expensive one to pay off – and then you could be putting an end to credit card debt for good.
Avoid online shops
OK, so you don’t have to stop shopping online entirely – in fact for many people it’s one of the only ways to shop if you have limited accessibility and time. However, online shops make it very easy to wrack up credit card debts and many people see their debts spiral through online shopping.
Why not try deleting all of your credit card information from online stores? If your credit card is saved, it makes it much easier to buy things quickly and without truly considering whether they are within your budget. If you can delete your information so that you have to input it from scratch each time, you could be well on your way to putting an end to credit card debt.
Consider increasing your payments
Many people with credit card debt fall into the trap of only paying off the minimum balance. Why not consider paying off a little extra each month to put an end on your credit card debts sooner, and move forward financially?
Of course, there’s a balance between not stretching yourself financially, and making increased repayments to end your debt sooner. Try to figure out if you have any extra cash each month that you could dedicate sorting your credit card debt once and for all. If not, is there a way you could make a bit of extra money – by selling unwanted gifts or items online or taking some extra shifts at work?
The longer your credit card debt rolls on, the more months it’ll take you to pay things off. With high-interest rates, you can often pay a lot more than you think and debt spirals quickly, so prioritise increasing your payments today.
